Mesh awarded CASP license by FSCA

Mesh.trade is the first fully licensed issuance platform in Africa to tokenise financial assets.

Mesh’s mission is to help shape a new world of open capital markets, transforming the complexity of traditional finance into the seamless and secure world of Finance 3.0. That mission took a huge step forward on 10 July 2024 when South Africa’s Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) awarded Mesh a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) license, making Mesh the first fully licensed issuance platform in Africa to tokenise financial assets.

“Our license means we are a fully regulated crypto asset platform that can facilitate the issuance, trade and management of tokenised financial assets,” says Mesh MD Connie Bloem. “This is an important milestone for the continent as the capital markets move inexorably into an era of Finance 3.0, which is defined by greater access, ease of use and transparency.”

The FCSA awarded Mesh full financial services provider (FSP) Category 1 and Category 2 licenses. This, says Bloem, is a validation of Mesh’s commitment to democratising access to capital raising and investment opportunities.

As a licensed FSP, Mesh embraces the regulatory environment in its mission to create the trusted digital capital markets of the future. “We are committed to working with regulators to ensure both issuers and investors are safeguarded,” says Bloem.

Mesh uses cutting-edge blockchain technology to bridge the gap between TradFi, (traditional financial and capital markets), AltFi (alternative financial assets and private capital investment instruments) and DeFi (distributed ledger technology).

“Ultimately, the Mesh platform is designed to support multi-asset portfolios, as well as a regulated alternative avenue for entrepreneurs to raise capital to fund their growth,” Bloem adds.

The news of Mesh’s CASP license follows its successful launch of Africa’s first tokenised corporate bond: Die MOS’s 10-year prime +2% floating rate bond. More new tokenised real-world assets – including debt instruments, equities and a range of funds – will follow.
